Maze Design Contest

Nathan Laznicka from Hamilton Middle School in Madison is our 2009 Children's Corn Maze Design contest winner.

Nathan's Fish Maze is our small maze this year, and is extra fun -- we've added a "Finger Fun" game suitable for all ages (and super funny too!)

Guidelines:

  • The winning entry will be cut into our cornfield in the summer of 2010 and will be open to the public in the fall of 2010.
  • The winner's name, and a brief description will be posted at the entrance and on the website (first name only if desired for privacy reasons; winner's picture on website is also optional.)
  • The design will be modified to allow it to be cut and to make a good maze (trails may be added/deleted.)
  • The design must be ORIGINAL (no licensed characters, etc.)
  • All decisions are final.
  • Acceptable forms of submission-

                  -Paper (pencil, ink, crayon, etc.)

                  -Electronic (PDF, jpeg)

  • All ages are welcome and have a good chance of winning (a kindergartner's drawing is as likely to win as a high school art student's design...)
  • For younger entrants, a simple line drawing is fine.  Too much detail will not work as a maze
  • For older students:

-        Field size is 150' wide and 320' feet long (see example at bottom of page.)

-        Trail size is five feet wide.

-        Must have a minimum of ten feet between trails

  • Entrance and exits must be on south side of design only.
  • Ideas:
  • The design can be a true maze (multiple decision points, but only one correct solution.)
  • The design can have multiple decision points and more than one solution.
  • The design can be a labyrinth where there is only one path and there are no decision points.
  • It can be a network of interconnecting trails that make a picture when it is viewed from above
  • The design can be a logic puzzle (i.e. no left turn maze)
  • For more info on mazes and labyrinths, see click mazes, Amazing art.
And Remember-
This maze is for grade school and younger children.  It shouldn't be so challenging and frustrating that they cannot enjoy it (with adult's help.)
  • Long dead ends are not fun and too many people will be tempted to cut through the corn.

Not required (But we would sure love to hear from you)

            1) How did you think of your design?  Does is have any special meaning to you?

            2) Have you ever been to a maze you could walk through?

            3) Some mazes have games inside them such as trivia questions:

For instance :Answer correctly and the arrow points you to the correct path, answer incorrectly and the arrow points you to a dead end. Does your maze have trivia questions or other games for maze goers?
